I originally bought the D90, because it shared the same sensor as the D300, which meant shooting at higher ISO's was possible. I then used a D300, and found the size and ergonomics of the camera to be more to my liking, so i purchased one too. That was about 2 months after i bought my D90.
As far as film goes, a Minolta Maxxum 7xi and a Canon Rebel T2.
I hopped an Air Force cargo plane to Japan 40 years ago to purchase my first Canon SLR -- an FT-QL. I've been shooting Canons ever since. My main camera now is a 1D MkII.
I too shoot a Canon 1D MarkII. I started with a Canon AE-1 and then the Elan. First digital was the Canon 10D. Then came the 1D MII. I used a 30D as a backup and studio camera for while and sold it to a friend when it was no longer needed. If I upgrade it will be a 5D MarkII for landscapes as a hobby in retirement.
Nikon D2X with a Nikon D300 as a backup. Expect to upgrade from the D2X to a D3X as soon as they become available. About a dozen various lenses, all Nikkor except one teleconverter.
I started with Canon years ago, and I've had or still have in some cases a Canon F-1, A1, AE-1 Program, Rebel G, Elan7E, EOS III, D-10 digital SLR, S2 IS and now and S5 IS. I guess you could say I'm a Canon gal.
If I could afford to upgrade to a more powerful and capable digital DSLR I would probably still wait since I have yet to master what I already have. By the time I caught on to everything, I'd be way behind the current technology all over again.

Funny, me too! And I am way behind you girl!
Started out with a Minolta 35 mm years ago. It is still almost new in box. Then a couple of years ago a Nikon (do not remember the model). Now a Canon A630 and soon to be a Canon EOS 400D SLR. Now if I could only get up the nerve to take it out of AUTO MODE! I am so afraid I will mess up the settings and not find my way back! So here I will stay stuck in AUTO with a Canon of course!
