So I finally moved to Pittsburgh a week ago. Having traveled around the country quite a bit, this place is just amazing! It has big city options with small city prices. And the people..happy, friendly people. We have to move out of state next year, but I'm really hoping we can come back and just settle in Pittsburgh.

Well, okay, so this post is just a thank you to all you Pittsburgh people.

Great to hear. In which part of the city are you living and what have you done around town so far?

I'm living in Shadyside, within a mile of the Market District Giant Eagle and Trader Joes! Grocery shopping is fun, even though parking is a nightmare. Also planning to go to the East End Co-Op as soon as I can.

In terms of actually doing things, we've been to a couple of different restaurants (Tamarind on N Craig, Kaya in the strip district-both good) and eaten off the food vans in Oakland. A lot of move-related shopping- there's a Tuesday Morning right next to TJs! We also went to the LIEMAXX at the waterfront mall and saw Inception.

I'm planning to go to the free Lives They Left Behind Exhibit at Frick's pretty soon, and then go up the inclines whenever the spouse visits next. Oh, and get a card at the Carnegie library.

What are your favorite things to do around town?

The Frick Art and Historical Center is great, as is exploring Frick Park. I'd also recommend a visit to the Heinz History Museum (maybe on a rainy day), exploring the Strip, walking around Downtown and the North Shore . . . there are lots of fun things to do that also help you get to know the area and its history a bit better.

As an aside, the Lives They Left Behind exhibit is not at the Frick Museum in Point Breeze. It is at the Frick Fine Arts gallery on the Pitt campus. The Frick Fine Arts building is across the street from the Carnegie Library and Schenley Plaza. The museum in Point Breeze is great, but I didn't want the OP to go there expecting that exhibit and be disappointed.

Definitely check out the Strip District.

A note to everyone: I recently learned that movies are $5 (plus free popcorn) at Waterorks on Mondays, even the evening shows.

Thanks, Jay! I drove by Whole Foods a couple of times, but everyone keeps referring to it as Whole Paycheck, and it just turns me off. Pretty sure I'll end up there sooner or later, though- TJs simply does not have enough variety.

Does anyone know of Asian/Midddle Eastern/other ethnic grocery stores in the area?

Thanks for all the other information, folks. I can't wait to go to the strip district on a weekend!

In Shadyside there's Tokyo Japanese Market. The strip has a large selection of
Various other asian markets (mainly korean/chinese/vietnamese). There is also labad's middle eastern grocer and reyna mexican groceria.
