Mad Mex near the mall at robinson is decent. I'm from Texas myself. I wouldn't expect great tex-mex up here, but it's already beat my previous location.

Edit: didn't realize the long discussion on mad mex. I won't try to classify what it is exactly, except that its not bad. I think its a bit pricey for 'mexican' food. Margaritas are decent though.

Living here in the capital of Tex-Mex, where you can't drive a mile in any direction without passing 2-3 Tex-Mex places, it's amusing to see a thread with people clamoring for Tex-Mex. In the San Antonio forum, people groan when they learn that another new Tex-Mex place is opening up.

Of all the chains mentioned above, AFAIK Pappasitos is the only one headquartered in Texas. I've been there once. It's OK, but it doesn't stand out here in Tex-Mex country.

IMO, the key to great Tex-Mex is fresh tortillas. If you can find a place that makes its own tortillas and makes its own salsa and guacamole, that's where you want to be.

BTW, you'll never get Tex-Mex food for as cheap there in Pittsburgh as we get it down here in Texas, because the raw materials like jalapenos and avocados cost much more there and everywhere else up north than they do down here.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Mexicasa in Dormont... not sure if it's exactly considered "Tex-mex" but they have damn good burrittos. And around Thanksgiving they have the Gobblerito (a Thanksgiving dinner wrapped up in a burritto)! Nom nom!

So then how is it all the way up in Chicago I can wander into any number of Mexican joints with a fiver and waddle out?
