Well, part 2 of my short story, I got the job yesterday! I'll be working at the Rivers Casino. I flew in on Monday and I left back to SFLA today. Now I need to find the right neighborhood to live in. I've heard from some locals that Robinson township was great.

I'm married and have a 7 year old som who is on the autism spectrum. The right school for his treatment would be a priority as well as short commute to the casino. I'm open to both the city and the burbs. I had a state trooper I was talking to recommend greenfield.. A coworker said south side, I got all kinds of answers. I anticipate my start date will be mid January to early February. Oh, and my wife doesn't drive so some kind of walkability would be cool, but not a necessity. Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated!

Will your son attend a special school? That makes a difference if you need to consider public school systems. Also, what is you budget? Are you renting, buying? How much can you spend? There are lots of options for an easy commute. If you take public school out of the equation, you might be able to walk to work.

I'd search the archives here . . . these are representative threads:

Scanning around I saw at least a few mentions of Pine-Richland. That wouldn't be a very walkable choice, but it would be an easy commute to the Casino.

Edit: I'm seeing mentions of North Allegheny too. Same deal (not very walkable, but an easy commute).

Robinson Township is not walkable. I actually turned down a job offer out there to accept a lower-paying position near me here in the city because I couldn't bear the idea of working in a sterile environment like that. I realize school quality would probably trump your wife's mobility; however, wouldn't it be nice to have both? Also, congratulations on your offer! I love the casino, and it would be nice to meet you once you start working!

I know he will need a public school because private school is too much money. My budget would be $1000 and under and a 2 bedroom or bigger. I am renting too, not ready to buy until i live out there for at least one year. I am still waiting on his test results, which i will have tomm. at his school meeting to see where on the spectrum he is. This would help to narrow down his needs.

Can think of one very specific place in Pine Twp that gives a shot at walkable; that would be the Village at Pine. Whether or not that works for budget/preferences is another matter. You're walking to a shopping plaza, but it's a new one with a Giant Eagle supermarket and several other businesses, plus a few more across the road. For N. Allegheny, even harder. The closest to it is maybe the Ingomar area of McCandless, which stretches the definition. If you can find a place near the Kuhn's grocery on W. Ingomar Rd you at least have that and the post office (and a school, elementary I think) that are walkable.

These are such specific spots that it's unlikely you'll find a rental that will meet the price range right in those places, but you never know. There was one posted for Ingomar last week: http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/apa/2097590687.html (broken link)

The commute isn't that short. It's fairly easy but you're going to need close to half an hour from such places even at low traffic times.

Yea i hear ya, robinson is definitely not walkable unless one is a well trained triathlon athlete or something lol. Anyway, it [i]would[i] be nice to have both, thats for sure. I am glad you like the casino, maybe i will see ya out there one day.. that place gets really busy, and that is with no hotel!

I'd only suggest that you first focus on your son's school. The location of that will narrow your choices. By the way, congratulations and I hope it all works out for you and your family.

Yes. My first day was Monday. The store is now open! I had today off, but I'll be in tomorrow.
