Anyone know of a good service person/company who wouldn't charge an arm and a leg?

The one I would call for my own place is Air Pro. Air Pro Heating and Cooling - Home Page

The one you should definitely not call (and I think this has gotten around enough recently) is Gillece.

Good luck and hope you can get it fixed before the cold comes back. Luckily, today through Friday will actually be warm!

They aren't really an emergency call place, but you might try Commonwealth Heating & Cooling (our regular furnace people).

I use Wahl, and they've always been reasonable: WAHL Heating & Cooling | Just call Wahl. We're in the neighborhood.

Fortunately I have enough electric heaters that we're only down about 6* from our usual temperature of 65, so it's not so bad.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I'll be giving a few places a call.

Call Jim Bell / Bell Plumbing Service-412-952-1350 ( Bellevue) A few years ago my 40 year old furnace finally died and he replaced it. His price was fair , he knows what he's doing and I totally trust him.

I am always surprised based on how many nagative stories I hear about Gillece that people still call him.

He has a huge operation and advertises a lot. There's a lot of HVAC work to go around. We always hear more about the negatives too; I'm sure some people are satisfied. But I know someone personally who had a bad experience so it's not just isolated cases it seems like.

I don't have a lot of experience with different outfits or even the one I mentioned because a few years ago I got a new furnace and A/C. The guy who put them in has since moved away but he worked for Air Pro.

Gillece got nailed for cyber squatting and buying up domain names of competitors and shifting searches for them to his site. Judge told him to cease. He may still end up paying damages as well.

Oh, to follow up - I ended up getting Air Pro out here, they sent a guy out and he diagnosed it as a bad inductor motor ... but it's a part that had to be ordered and will be in on Monday, when he'll be back to replace it.

I'm really glad I didn't put my electric heaters in storage. We're sitting at a tolerable 55* in the house with just a few small electric heaters.

Can't wait for spring/summer.
