Here is the article:

More Pittsburgh students fare better on state tests

The latest round of test scores showed progress in the large majority of grades/subjects, and overall. It also showed a narrowing gap between white students and black students. There is still much more to be done, but this is an encouraging sign given all the ongoing reforms.

The Fulton French Magnet in Highland Park beat out Linden with overall math scores. The 5th grade graduation class (my daughter 5th / son 3rd) was the best class (academically) to graduate from Fulton. The school is at least 85% Black. The principal, Mr. Bivens is young and black. His daughter attends the school and he raised the bar once it became a magnet. Initiallly parents wanted the magnet students segragated from the feeder students. He refused and made the entire school a french magnet.

They still don't meet AYP and they have a long way to go. Overall, results are disappointing. They can't get 2/3rds of the students to meet grade level math and reading. Next years targets will be even tougher.

Still, some improvement is better than going the other direction. Hopefully the new super can turn things around.

Officials highlighted results from Pittsburgh Arsenal K-5 and Pittsburgh Perry High School. Arsenal's reading proficiency increased 18.2 percentage points from 2010 and 22.5 percentage points from 2007. The school's math proficiency rose by 9.4 percentage points from last year and 26.1 percentage points from 2007.
Is this down to the changing nature of Lawrenceville perhaps?

Holy Family School closed last year, and presumably a fair number of those pupils transferred to Arsenal, that could have kicked up the averages somewhat.

I live in lawrenceville and went to st John Neumann and know that very few of those parents would send their kids to aresnal if they could afford to not. Most of the kids I heard went to st Raphaels or immaculate conception.
