Hi all, We're new to Pittsburgh (living in Moon) and have family coming into town for the holidays. I'm looking for some fun things to do around the area.
  • Are there any holiday events that take place?
  • Any places around the area that are 'must-sees' during the holidays?
  • Are there any great places to go look at Christmas lights?
We'll have a range from 2-4 year olds to teens to grandparents so all ideas are welcome!

Thanks!

I love the nationality class rooms in the Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh's campus. I think it's open all year but they decorate them for the season.

Second the Nationality Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning.

Lots of the public spaces Downtown are decorated, and you can do things like take horse-and-carriage rides, ice-skate, and so forth.

We went to Phipps one year in December. I want to do it again this year. So pretty in there.

Thanks for the ideas so far everyone..and please keep them coming!

What's Phipps?

Would I be able to find Heartwood Acres and Oglebay on my iPhone GPS, or is there a more specific name that I shoudl look for to find it?

Phipps Conservatory, a Victorian-era (since updated) greenhouse and gardens (and an excellent suggestion, I might add):

The aviary in West Park on the North Side is a nice place to go when it gets real bitter cold.

They have to keep the place warm enough inside for tropical birds.

Yeah, there are some nice thighs to do downtown like check out Macy's window displays, PPG Place's Wintergarden and outdoor rink, and Market Square's light display.

One thing to note is that the horse and carriage rides and the Holly Trolley only run on the Saturdays. Similarly, the kids activities at One Oxford Place are only available on Saturdays.

Speaking of the Cathedral of Learning, they have the common area decorated and today they had the fireplace going. I would also recommend walking around downtown near Macys and PPG place, and going over to station square. Welcome to the city
