Moving from Portland, OR and having a hell of a time finding a rental home. We do not want to be in the city.

We are 2 women, our 2 teenagers, one cat and one dog.

Willing to pay $1000. What areas are preferable?

I am a Union Roofer and she works in a dental lab making dentures.

Do you want immediate suburbs ? $1000 should get you into a fairly decent area but won't get you into an upscale neighborhood. I would say check West View, Ross, Perrysville, Shaler etc in the North Hills Area. Areas west- Robinson Twn, Moon Twn, Hopewell Twn.

There are many nice South suburbs but I don't know anything about the school districts they are contained in. I would recommend the East suburbs of Monroeville / Murrysville area.

For $1,000 a month, if you are planning on sticking around I'd recommend just buying a place...prices are much cheaper here than Portland.
