sorry, but SF does NOT have better transit than Boston, DC or Chicago. I'd take that list with a grain of salt the size of texas

So only 8% of workers use transit to get to work here? That doesnt seem like PAT's presence or absence would be all that earth shattering.

Absence would prevent the impoverished from getting to the grocery store, doctors' appointments, etc.

I'm sure it's a lot more than 8% in Downtown and Oakland. The gridlock there would be insane.

They manage to do all those things in areas served with no mass transit

Pittsburgh is more of a bible belt kind of place. It dies around 2:00AM at the latest. This ain't Miami or NYC.

To get 24/7 activity in an area, I would think you probably need to meet at least a three of these conditions:
-a very high density of residents in close proximity (preferably walking distance)
-a large number of night-shift as well as day-shift workers (i.e. those that HAVE TO be out at off-hours)
-a large demographic that chooses to be out at off-hours (chiefly students I'd think)
-a mix of uses with activity every part of the day (and night, and morning...like in the Strip to some degree)

Of course, as Brian mentioned, a 2:00 last call is probably prohibitive to the creation of any such area.

What is odd is that Oakland seems to meet the criteria, yet it is not anywhere close to being a 24/7 activity area. Maybe the last call laws prohibit that

Points 1 though 3 define Oakland.

Even many NYC neighborhoods have been switching to 2:00am last call.
