I wouldn't buy a house on Wettach Street.

If it's just a rental, give it a try, but only if you don't have school-aged children you plan to send to public school.

YEARS ago, I lived on Spring Hill. I know the area you're considering VERY well.

The difference between Wettach Street and the Mexican War Streets is that the Mexican War Streets has many, many blocks of what's considered somewhat safe.

Whereas, Wettach Street is immediately surrounded by nastiness, not blocks away from it.

You won't be able to safely walk around at night, but you can live there safely if you know how.

I hope that makes sense.

Update! We did finally move to Wettach in Deutschtown, near the Penn Brewery, and like it a lot. It's a 15 minute walk downtown and in 8 months we haven't had a peep of trouble. Walking the pups at night isn't a problem.

Our neighbors say that it's changed much in the last few years.

Breadworks on the Northside has many varieties of dark breads and hard rolls. S & D Polish Deli in the Strip has great deli bologna and ham sausage that make a great brotchen.
If you're looking for German sausage or wurst you would have to check specialty food stores or ask if they can order them for you.

Aldi's also carries imported German pumpernickel bread and marzipan stollen.

Default That's great to know that you like it here!

We've been looking for a place around there, as we're opening up a theater in the area. East Allegheny (or East Deutschtown) has a far worse reputation than it deserves. There's a crazy amount of change going on right now in the neighborhood, and it could (and should) be an awesome neighborhood. There are some things happening, but the biggest problems are absentee landlords and people who are holding on to their houses, letting them fall into disrepair.
