‘Smartest’ US Cities Have a Rusty Tint | Rust Wire

Methodology:

Quote:
[s]cientists at Lumosity tracked the cognitive performance of more than one million users in the United States on their games, mapping them across U.S. metros using IP geolocation software. Individual scores were recorded in five key cognitive areas: memory, processing speed, flexibility, attention, and problem solving. The data was normalized into a basic brain performance index controlling for age and gender. Only metros with more than 500 observations were included. The data cover 169 metros.
Pittsburgh was ranked 19 out of the 169 (not bad!). One of the leading explanatory hypotheses is that living in university communities encouraged better scores.

Interesting, though I think a chart of "brain intensity" would also be nifty. I'd guess that Pittsburgh would do pretty well by that metric, too.

Looking at the education ; where we are coming from, only 77% of kids graduate ; where we are going to ; 96% graduate.

Where we are coming from ; 37% go onto a 4 year college, where we are going to ; 76% go to a 4 year college.

Point taken.

The state with the highest racially charged search rate in the country was West Virginia. Other areas with high percentages included western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, upstate New York and southern Mississippi.

Perhaps. Or that there is nothing else to do besides play whatever the on-line game was for the study, and thus they get really good at it... (I'm kidding.)
