Does anyone know of a veterinary dermatologist besides the one on Camp Hill Road?

PVSEC is probably it. (That's the place you're talking about on Camp Horne Rd.) There are actually two vets there though doing dermatology. As you probably remember I have a bad memory/opinion of that place in general, although to be fair it was on the emergency side not the specialists.

Did a quick search, if you go on this web site ACVD - American College of Veterinary Dermatology and do some digging there's one other that charts as within 50 miles, although those distances are always weird. It's in Girard, Ohio near Youngstown. I don't know if they're just traveling or what; they list I think more locations than doctors and a wide variety of locations: Dermatology for Animals |

I suppose there could be one that isn't a member of the ACVD org. Nothing immediately comes up though. If you're willing to go wider than that 50-mile search radius you'll probably find more. There are several in eastern PA looks like, but that's a long ways to go. There are only so many places within reasonable distance that you might expect to find more such doctors.

If you're willing to go out to Columbus (which I don't find to be too bad of a drive), there'd be veterinary dermatologists at OSU. I've had to use specialists out there before that aren't available around here, and they're great out there.

My Harrisburg years are showing. I did mean Camp Horne Road.

The Camp Horne Road one requires a referral. I can make myself an appointment for a dermatologist without a referral but I can't get my dog into one. My vet keeps postponing---saying let's wait until winter. His fur is all weird and I can't get answers. They keep brushing off my concerns. I'm ready to take him anywhere.

Thanks! I'll definitely call them. I hope they don't require a referral.

Columbus isn't too far to get answers. I don't want this to be a situation where I find out what's wrong with him too late.

Yeah, I'm not sure if they do or not. The specialists I used didn't need one, but it wasn't in that field. Their website has a number for people to call direct for appointments, and I don't see the word referral on the page:

Dermatology and Otology | College of Veterinary Medicine

Good luck.

Oh, didn't think of the universities. Cornell has a great vet medicine program too, or Penn (my vet went to Penn), but those are farther than OSU. As long as the dog does okay in the car, I guess you'd be fine.

I'm not understanding why the PVSEC place requires a referral for that. Seems odd to me. I understand that it is a place vets refer patients to all the time, but I wouldn't have thought it an out and out requirement. Although...maybe why they do it is to keep on good terms with referring vets, as otherwise it might seem like they are syphoning off too many clients.

After my appointment with the regular vet on Tuesday, I'll decide if I need a dermatologist. I have come to the conclusion he may have Cushing's. Maybe going into the appointment with that knowledge might motivate them to figure out what's wrong with him. I have been trying to get a straight answer about his symptoms for a few months. They have been disregarding very important symptoms. If I get brushed aside again on Tuesday, I'm heading to a university.

What's wrong with your dog, Hopes?

Northview Animal Hospital may be able to help you. They provide some more advanced services including emergency care. I saw under primary care they have listed allergies and itchy skin which may mean they cover what you are looking for whether it's allergy related or not. They are open 24/7 but extra fees apply if you go there outside there normal office hours/appointments.
