I lived in Pgh my entire life and like all of you I always said they over reported the gloom and doom BUT now that I live in Florida I learned that it is always better to be over prepared than not prepared at all. Closing schools was probably a good thing, had the storm did to the Pgh area what they thought it might, everyone would have awakened this morning with no power and possible flooding. In that case everyone would be complaining the other way, not enough was done. They do these things to prepare for the "unknown". So the kids got a day off school, no harm done. Better safe than sorry.

Well, I certainly agree that we kind of got off easier than a lot of other places. If it were 5-10 degrees colder last night we could have had some real trouble with all of the leaves still on the trees.

Our school announced a 2-hour delay for this morning. Personally, I thought it was a good call. We live in a very rural area with lots of woods and creeks. The creeks have been full of leaves and with a decent amount of rain can clog at culverts under roads. With flooding on the roads, coupled with the possibility of power outages due to fallen trees, that 2-hour delay gave them (the township and school) an opportunity to check roads for flooding and/or downed power lines. I'd rather have them check before I send my kids out onto the road to get the bus.

I just realized, presumably Wigle Whiskey in the Strip is open today. So if you need some booze you can get unaged whiskey or now gin too that is distilled right in the Strip. No effing state store required.

Been meaning to pick up the gin to try.

Has anyone heard from either BurghGirl17 or okaydorothy? I know both of them live in the South Fayette Township/Bridgeville area, and I was just wondering how they fared since I heard that area had some pretty strong winds. I'm worried about you gals!

I'm fine with closing the schools. The storm could have easily hit here harder and parents need some ability to plan. But shutting down the liquor stores in the whole state is just wrong. Wine is basically in the same category as groceries.

We dodged a bullet. If we hadn't prepared by closing schools and the snow hit people would be lamenting the schools should have closed. Better safe than sorry. I know I wouldn't want my kid stranded at school in over a foot of snow.

I agree it makes sense to make the school delay/closure decision early the evening before at the latest in order to allow parents time to make appropriate plans, and given the information available as of last evening, I think erring on the side of caution was appropriate.

I also agree closing the liquor stores across the state was silly, and I would launch into a discourse on privatization if I thought it would do any good.

I think the majority of Pennsylvanias can survive a few days without liquor stores.
