Young 20 somethings moving to Pittsburgh in January - APARTMENTS (Sharon: apartment complexes, rentals)

Hey guys, I'm from Western PA (Sharon PA) but haven't lived in on this side of Pennsylvania since 2007 (Penn State grads). Since then my girlfriend and I have graduated college. She's landed a pretty good job in Pittsburgh. I have 2 offers of one as well. With that being said, we have a baby with a July due date and her start date is January.

We've been looking for apartments in the surrounding areas on Craigslist, have even looked at the crime maps on here. She's pretty frugal so for a 2 bedroom apartment (size doesn't matter, just a safe place/area) in the $500-800 a month range with the cheaper being better. This isn't a 'live here forever place' but just a nice start on a solid apartment in the Pittsburgh area. Any ideas? Obviously the more utilities/internet included the better.

Location doesn't matter too much. Obviously the closer the better but obviously the further the cheaper. But anywhere in a 15 mile radius would work. She's really into gated apartment complexes (she's intrigued by the Flats at Fox Hill in Monroeville).

UPMC is all over town- the UPMC Tower on Grant St? UPMC Presby? UPMC East? UPMC St. Margarets?

Monroeville to Presby isn't a commute I'd like , especially when working standard hours, but plenty of people do it. If she likes gated communities, there isn't going to be much choice at all, especially in that price range.

What about Oak Hill? Oak Hill Apartments Apartment Rentals

I don't know if it's gated, but it's a community and it's right near Presby.

Looks great, but certainly out of the girlfriends price range. A 2 bedroom is $1600 a month.

Hiland Hills is a gated community off of Banksville Rd and Crane Ave, just south of the south portal for the Ft Pitt tunnels.

2 br apt is 840.


Although its true that you have to go through the tunnels to get to Oakland- you would be really close to them.

Although its true that you have to go through the tunnels to get to Oakland- you would be really close to them.

To get to Oakland from Crane, it's easy to cut over to 51 and then go up and over Mt. Washington to the Liberty Bridge. Depending on the Ft. Pitt traffic, it may not be exponentially faster, but at least you're moving.
