Take your showers and baths tonight. Pipes might freeze before morning.

Now it's -5 Fahrenheit with a wind chill of -25 Fahrenheit. It shouldn't get much colder than this (I hope!)

Damn. My boiler just started losing ground. It has been set at and maintaining 69 all day. I just looked and it's 68. I'm going to lose degrees all through the night. It's not going to be fun waking up tomorrow, and we're going to spend the whole day trying to heat up the house, only to go through losing degrees tomorrow night. I never bothered to install auxiliary heat because it rarely stays cold for long in Pittsburgh. I'm glad this deep freeze is only two days.

I stand corrected. It is now -6 Fahrenheit with a wind chill of -29 Fahrenheit. Well, if we're going to go much lower we may as well smash a record, right?

We already did (for both the 6th and 7th). The previous record low for both dates is 5 below, in 1942 and 1884, respectively; it was 7 below at midnight, and 8 below with a sustained (i.e. sustained winds, NOT gusts) wind chill of 28 below as of the last hourly update at 00:51. With a gust of just 25 mph that wind chill reduces to 35 below. Check out National Weather Service : Observed Weather for past 3 Days : Pittsburgh International Airport

Whether we'll reach the coldest levels post-1994 (10 below in January 2009) remains to be seen. Fingers crossed!

Officially it is in -10 in Beaver Falls. I am a few miles north and registering -12. I get to leave in a few hours for a colonoscopy. I must have done something really bad in my last life.
