I think some people really give too much credit to the average US citizen. I truly think most people are ignorant of, or choose to be ignorant of the amount of calories in the foods they eat. I know people downtown who eat a combo meal from McDonald's or Wendy's everyday for lunch, even though that is well over half of their day's caloric values. I work with people who have master's degrees who complain about how they can't lose weight, but yet I see them with two giant starbuck's latte's everyday. I definitely think McDonald's, Wendy's, Starbucks (who mostly already does), DD, and all similar places should bombard people with the nutritional information. Why? Because it costs the rest of us who aren't ignorant tons of money. $150 billion dollars in 2008 in obesity related medical costs alone, not including other related costs.

Hey, that was actually funny.

Bet the next stamp bag brand will be "Happy Meal".

The biggest problem with this to me is where you draw the line. No matter where you draw it, there will be some losers. Bigger companies are already calculating nutrition so that's not really a burden to them. Small companies likely wouldn't be able to afford the analysis. Even something that is marginally a "chain" could be small enough for this to be a burden.

True, but I'm not sure why we would think posting the calories more obviously will change that. Maybe on a few ridiculously calorie dense items.

You're probably right about that. Now that obesity is considered a disease, there's also some evidence that it lowers peoples' already low concern about it:
Labeling obesity as a disease may have psychological costs -- ScienceDaily

I am really against over-regulation and stupid laws, but obesity and the nonchalant attitude most obese people in the US have has really gotten to the point where only over-regulation can change these people's decisions.

We live in a city that is ruled by healthcare companies that own for-profit hospitals, obesity makes them piles of cash (obesity is now considered a disease). I'm sure they have enough... ahem... influence to make sure that labeling would never fly in this city. Less obese and unhealthy people has a direct impact on their bottom line, I'm sure they wouldn't stand by idly in an event like that.

I can just see it now, the govt will create a Bureau of Calorie Counters to check all restaurants to make sure the calorie count is correct.

What do you do when 35% and counting of your adult population refuses to do this at the expense of others who do?

But if someone has their heart set on eating a bacon double cheeseburger and chili fries, how is having nutrition information available going to stop them?
