The average temperature in Pittsburgh in January 2014 was 22.1°F, which ties February 1947 and January 1985 for the 23rd-coldest month on record, and also ties the latter for the 16th-coldest January on record. It was also the third-coldest month and second-coldest January of the 21st Century, with January 2003 and February 2007 being the only colder months, and the former being the only colder January.

As for snowfall, the 17.9" for the month was four tenths of an inch shy of both the 50th-snowiest month and 20th-snowiest January on record.

I'm so done with January. I sure hope February isn't more of the same.

i havent minded it, actually. yea, its uncomfortable, and my skin is dry. i want to shed like a snake. but walk fast, bundled up, and you deal with it. i realize having to drive offers a lot more stress in ice and sno, but you are WARM and at least get to move yourself with some separation from others!

No, January 2009 was colder by 0.1F: thistemp, but for all purposes this can be considered a tie. While the daily average and maximum on the 7th were both the coldest since January 1994, it only dipped to 9 below (F) and there were only 13 days that didn't inch past freezing.

Another stat is that we are at 42.3" seasonal snowfall (normal entire season is 41.9"), and this is one of the top 10 snowiest seasons in terms of ONDJ/pre-Feb snow. By the standards here, 18" in a month DJFM snow is not very impressive unless of course it is sustained over three months.

I did five miles outside. I like a nice drizzle and not ice underfoot.
