He could rent out one of the bedrooms to someone skilled in contracting work, exchanging free rent for labor. It's a thought, anyway.

I bet its pretty noisy on Milroy with the I279 in the valley below.

When I was home shopping I looked at a home on Henderson and the noise outside was unrelenting.

It's not that bad actually, I think the trees absorb some of the noise. That's a pretty wooded hillside. I have a funny story about this house and the steps. When we were kids (late 70's thru late 80's) there was some sort of chute, possibly the remains of a coal chute at the top of those steps. The guy who lived in the house discussed in this thread was an older dude who must have had ownership over the chute. We'd slide down it on winter days, roll rocks down it, and he'd give us hell. One day he caught one of our group and proceeded to smack the hell out of him. We left a man behind that day, as we were scared he'd catch us too. That friend still brings up the fact that we left him to get gripped up like that, but we were only about 8-10 years old. fun stuff. The steps, not sure, it wouldn't be a terrible number IIRC. If I head through that way today I'll take a pic for you guys.

Yes!! Pics, we want pics! I don't know why I'm so enamored with this house, but it's really started to intrigue me.

Not sure if this will work, I can email you if it doesn't but the house is approximately to the left of where the steep steps begin. Sorry I couldn't get an actual pic of the house but it's definitely only accessible by the short alley spur and steps in this pic. PM me with your email address and i'll send you the photo...
Edit, It was pretty quiet, you can hear 279 but it isn't very loud at all.

I've used Photobucket to upload and share pictures here. It's free and not too complicated.

Just found a pretty bizarre one right outside the city: https://maps.google.com/?ll=40.45323...24.92,,0,-1.38

Also, I don't think anyone mentioned this little nook in Oakland: https://maps.google.com/?ll=40.43539...201.57,,0,4.44

I've walked past the steps down to those houses (off Blvd. of the Allies), but I've never taken them. It felt sort of like walking into somebody's yard, not a public street.
