look at baum blvd at aiken, before ritters. they keep doing roadwork on that road, but the thing is not the roadwork itself as it is the way they cover up the road. instead of just using steel covers for the entire project, they literally refill the ground and then next day dig in again. think about how much theyd save if they just used steel plates instead of filling it over and over every single day.

it might have a lot to do with the contractor more than Penn Dot. there are specifications on what is allowed and what isnt, though - maybe that specific thing (steel plates vs. cover/remove) is not specified. if you think its a valid argument, you should let PADOT know - it might be a totally understandable oversight on their part.

there might be a good reason to cover/remove, anyway, as opposed to steel plates.

Perhaps the frigid temps have required that the worksite be re-buried nightly.

Snowplows do not play well with street plates.

I hope that whatever utility upgrades they are doing will take into account not only the Hyatt House hotel they are building but also whatever they are planning to build on the other vacant lot across the street at Baum & Liberty, where I just noticed some sort of "zoning hearing" signs have been posted. It would suck if they had to tear everything up all over again for this second project.

Is it really PennDOT or is someone digging the road up for utilities? Usually they're not digging down into the dirt for road work in the city. Smells like utility work to me if they're digging up the same hole each day. If it's road work, would PennDOT even work on Baum or would it be the city? I don't know for certain how that works within large city limits, but I would have thought a road like Baum would be worked on by the city.

I'm all for ragging on PennDOT when warranted, but I am doubting they are involved in whatever is going on there.

across from the Hyatt House will be the Morrow Park City Apartments (or something like that).

greg - some roads in the city are PADOT funded. Penn Avenue, since it is route 8, is one. but its not PADOT per se - they manage the construction (budgets, progress...) but they get contractors. i dont think PADOT really has a construction crew that does significant construction, but rather repairs or temporary things.

i kind of liked all that open space and sight distance you get on Baum as you approach the intersection with Liberty. im sorry that will be closed up. i think thats where the either the Hyatt House or said apartments are going.
