Probably not too easy, but how could Pittsburgh have a significant conference like SXSW or ComicCon? SXSW is a major event in Austin, some places are even closed to do a deep cleaning now that it's over. I saw somewhere that today is Hangover day in Austin. I guess Houston's big even is Rodeo, but it's not like SXSW.
problem with austin is that they tend to underpay and col is higher than the rest of tx and even to pittsburgh. though in many ways i do see similarities between both cities.

There are some events here that have been slowly growing over the last few years that could take this form, but you don't create a SxSW overnight. These things take a lot of time to gain traction and worldwide reputation. It usually takes a decade for homegrown things like this to mature enough to be on the national radar in any city (unless some million-dollar sugar daddy swoops in to fund it). VIA is one festival that has the potential on the music front. There have been a few new CMU-oriented things that are aiming for the tech side of things.
