this is the single most interesting story in the history of post steel city history

obviously on one level the protractor is a sign of an arched bridge, of which we have many in the region

but on a deeper level, it's Freemasons

"Observant Pittsburghers have surely noticed all of the colored protractors glued to things in public places across Pittsburgh's neighborhoods."

The Story Behind Pittsburgh’s Unsolved Protractor Mystery Will Leave You Baffled

https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/penn...ry-pittsburgh/

"Pittsburgh boasts its fair share of urban legends and unsolved mysteries. One mystery, first uncovered in 2011, continues to barrel forward with plenty of speculation by Pittsburghers but no definitive conclusion. Perhaps you have the answer to Pittsburgh’s unsolved protractor mystery?"

The Protractor Map: A New High, A New Location

https://ericlidji.wordpress.com/cate...rotractor-map/

"I stumbled on No. 454, No. 455 and No. 456 while crossing the Smithfield Street Bridge the other day. The previous high number on the Master List was No. 418."

The mysterious protractors of Pittsburgh

https://boingboing.net/2011/07/08/my...protracto.html

"One of the oddest things I've seen since coming to Pittsburgh was a protractor superglued to the stone in my neighborhood. It turns out that there are hundreds of them cropping up, sealed to surfaces so securely that authorities intend to charge whoever is doing it with a felony. Each is penned with a unique number, and tracking them down is becoming a local mystery."

The Protractor Map: Digitized

https://ericlidji.wordpress.com/2011...map-digitized/

"There is much news to report.

First, we’ve found two more protractors. No. 86 (seen above) recently appeared on the staircase from Ellsworth to Highland, halfway down from its brother, No. 87 (also seen above, a rare double). No. 180 (after the jump) is at Ellsworth and Negley."
