After living in NYC for 15 years, I don't know how anyone can claim with a straight face that Pittsburgh is anyway similar to NYC, Philadelphia, or Baltimore. Before I moved here, people told me that Pittsburgh had a mixture of Northeastern, Appalachian, and Midwestern qualities. Not true! Pittsburgh is Appalachian through and throughout. Frankly, I think western Pennsylvania should just break off from the rest of the state and become part of West Virginia. Culturally, they are that similar. I know West Virginia gets a bad rap, but in order to succeed Pittsburgh should play up the "Paris of the Appalachian" thing and not try to be something that is not. Appalachian culture has a lot of positive qualities, the people are very nice (think Mr. Rogers), and it enjoys a great integration with the outdoors.

I have just finished reading "Paris of the Appalachia" the author makes some good points...Southwest Pennsylvania is unique
in both good and bad points...I knew someone from Brooklyn who said this is one of the strangest parts of the country she
has lived in stranger than Louisville, Kentucky after having lived there..

I am just making an observation. Drive east of Harrisburg, I get an east coast vibe. Drive north to Cleveland, I get a different vibe. Drive down into West Virginia, and I feel like I am still in the Pittsburgh region. I am not putting Pittsburgh down, there are certain aspects of Appalachian culture that I actually admire.

I dont recall Pittsburgh ever trying to be something that its not. Pittsburgh is Pittsburgh and we are located in the northeast. We have our own flava and we are o.k. with that.

You must have only been to Wheeling and Wierton because I've been around much of West Virginia and completely disagree with you.

I don't think it's that Pittsburgh is trying to be a Northeastern city. I think it's that it is in PA, which is usually considered part of the Northeast.

There's no such thing as "The Northeast" anyway.
