Hey everyone,
I am a college student and will be moving to AK this summer. My family has been going up for some time now, and we actually have a cabin up there. (My grandfather knows everyone it seems lol)
But I will be working instead of leisurely fishing. I was wondering if anyone had any local info about the summer happenings or best wifi spots, etc? ( I think I was there during the 4th of July, does that "parade" still happen?

I will greatly appreciate any info!

Here's what I know about Alaska:

1. Mount McKinley is the highest point in North America.

2. The worst earthquake ever in North America rocked Anchorage in 1964.

3. Point Barrow is the northernmost point in the United States.

4. Fort Yukon set the record high temperature for the state: 100°F. Ironically, the town is located directly on the Arctic Circle.

5. Folk singer Jewel is from Alaska.

6. Little Diomede is only accessible by airplane.

7. Juneau is the largest city in the United States by land area.

8. The Exxon Valdez oil spill was nasty as ****.

I hope some of this helps.

I am a fan of that tv show "Below Zero" on National Geographic Channel. It is about several people that throw caution to the wind and go live in the Alaskan Wilderness around and north of the Arctic Circle. It is reality tv actually worth watching.

Yes, they do have a 4th celebration. Wifi at some lodges/B&Bs but I don't think you'll even find a coffee shop. Not much there beyond recreation and lodging.

Where will you be working and living? Your best bet might be wifi there.

She'll be living in her family's cabin. It wouldn't be a good idea to use wifi while working.

There's something to be said for being cut off from the internet. I should move to Yakutat!

Ha! Good point about internet at work. Clearly I never do that.

Yakutat is cut off from more than the internet. Definitely great recreation though. Yakutat Alaska Chamber Of Commerce

There are many places in AK where you can "log off" and just enjoy the great outdoors.

Yakutat only got more notoriety -and more visitors- a few years ago when some surfing magazines did stories about people who surf there. Alaskan Edge | SURFER Magazine

It used to be more of a spot for locals /Alaskans to surf but now there's more visitors from other states.
I know someone who surfs there.
