Long time lurker here...
So, I've read enough housing posts to realize that the housing stock for the Pittsburgh area tends to be from the very early 20th century, with the emphasis on smaller buildings and individual landlords.

Nevertheless, if anyone happens to be familiar with any well managed buildings or rental complexes that are low allergen and reasonably accessible to the east end, I would be grateful for any leads . So far, I haven't had much luck with Zillow or craigslist.

There seems to be one place in Monroeville that is remodeling their apartments with hard surface flooring and new appliances - they even have built-in air-conditioning units rather than forced air. Those are all good elements for minimizing allergens. Unfortunately, the place doesn't seem particularly desirable. I just wish there were more places with similar environmental features.

individual landlords will be your best bet. There are lots of them that are meeting the demand of higher end rentals with all hardwood/laminate/ceramic floorings, higher end bathrooms and appliances. If you want a newly updated place in or around the east end or other high demand areas you will pay a premium.

Moving to Pittsburgh was a shocker. I was used to top of the line apartments even in the borderline sketchy parts of cities throughout the US. Pittsburgh has the worst rental housing stock I have ever seen in my life. Good luck.

There's excellent rental stock so long as you're willing to pay for it.

exactly. newcomers always read things about pittsburgh being super cheap and affordable for housing and then are shocked by reality. You really get what you pay for in this town. Want to pay 450 a month for a 2 bedroom apt or house? we have them in lots the depressed areas and river towns. it wont be new or modern at all but it will be inexpensive. Want a brand new loft style open concept, modern luxury condo within walking distance to lots of amenities? we have that too, but be ready to pay 2000+ per month for it.

Nope. (Let's call this type of housing a "3")

Nope, not looking for a "10".
I'd say I'm looking for a 6.75 or 7 apartment complex that was built within the last 35-40 years.

I'm expanding my search area to include the North Hills and South Hills apartment buildings/developments!

So, if anyone happens to recall being in a friend or relatives apartment, or lived in a place that had hard surface floors and seemed like a nice (but not luxury) place, I'd welcome any leads...

So, this building opposite Ross Park Mall seems like it could have been somewhat promising...
SHINY Hardwoods! Easy to Keep Clean! Only $99 DOWN
Wood floors, no air ducts, dishwasher, etc. Not fancy but seemingly serviceable.
Online reviews for the complex seem mixed -but what really concerns me is that it seems to be managed by Lobos Management... I think their reputation is enough to make me steer clear of them.
