Maybe I don't get around enough in the "right" neighbourhoods or demographics for it, but I really haven't heard this stereotypical accent much at all.

I was eating at a pizza place on Murray Avenue the other day, and the guy behind the counter and another customer were screaming at each other (you can't hear well around the pizza ovens, apparently) in fluent Yuns. It was a veritable concert, a duo in which each topped the other for volume and proper enunciation. It was a thing of beauty.

In fairness, the best Yuns I've heard in 15 years was at a 7-11 in West Virginia, near the Fiesta Factory.

I hear it all the time. It's very distinctive.

Also, did you hear a real Rhode Islander speak? WOW! Very cool.....and i think there are islands off the coast of North Carolina where their local accent is very noticeably british influenced!

EDIT - i quoted above because of Jan Hooks, possibly the most underrated SNL alum. I thought she was canadian, actually (she was in a candian sitcom a few years before getting movies here in the US).
Nah, Baltimore's accent is more southern.

Especially if you're not used to hearing it. The last time we went to Pittsburgh, my spouse, who is from Nebraska heard someone say "yunz" right away. I didn't notice it myself, being a native.

Sounds like an experience, that is for sure.

When I lived in DC, hon, and would go to Baltimore on occasion, the accent reminded me more of Pittsburgh than anywhere in the South.

When I lived in DC, and would get homesick, I'd enjoy going to Baltimore because it had a much more "Pittsburghish" feel than DC did. My friends that hated Pittsburgh avoided Baltimore just for that reason.

The guy who's running for governor of Montana has a classic Maryland accent. There's certainly some Appalachian/Pittsburghese similarities, but enough differences (especially "o" pronunciation) to make it different. Unfortunately, he did not say, "Vote for me, hon."
