HI I was there in 2005 and it was a bit run down, but had some nice buildings and never ran into anyone hostile.

I liked the old railway chemical building on 115 Island St

What is this area like now especially around Island st?

I'm more familiar with nearby Stowe Township near Broadway than McKees Rocks near Island Ave (usually just passing through that area), but both areas are really quite similar..

Though the area is quite depressed/run down & likely has a lot of drug issues, I wouldn't feel unsafe walking through the area. The area really hasn't changed much since 2005 (well, other than the McDonalds being torn down)..

Luckily, being near Island avenue, you are walking distance to some wonderful pierogies

Also, they finally opened West Carson Street, so the area is convenient again

It's still run down, but nowhere near as sketchy as it was years ago for the average person visiting or living there.

It's on a slight upswing, I think. The owner of the Thunderbird Café in Lawrenceville is renovating the Roxian Theater in downtown McKees Rocks as a music venue. They also have a successful music / food event every year in McKees Rocks, called the Feastival. Some new eateries have opened in West Park on Broadway, and the theater in West Park is being turned into a microbrewery / classic film venue. McKees Rocks also has a coffee shop opening in the Father Ryan Arts Center.

2016 McKees Rocks varies from very stagnant to in rapid decline.
Hays Manor, Uansa Village, Meyers-Ridge formerly McKees Rocks Terrace, Pleasant Ridge formerly Ohioview Terrace are the Stowe Rocks projects.
Island Avenue area, Church Avenue area and Russellwood-Broadway Ave area are where most shootings occurred lately.
Third Street Park area, "The Bottoms", Valley St-to Chartiers Ave area also have increasing drug/violence issues in regards to the heroine epidemic.
West Park from 7th to 11th Street & McKees Rocks from Railroad St to the tracks is now getting rough as well. "Norwood Park" is more stagnant, but drugs are a real problem. There was a North Side gang related killing that spilled over into Fredrick St in 2015. On Island Ave in Stowe: Silky's & Shooters ironically had shootings.

However, Presston Park, much of Stowe past 11th and the area around Mt. Calvary are fine, typical Pittsburgh overlooked neighborhoods.
