PPG buys naming rights to Consol Energy Center for 20 years | TribLIVE

So this winter when someone say they're going to the rink at PPG, do they mean the Plaza or the Arena?

The "PPG" part is fine, but I don't understand why they're adding "Paints." It would be like calling something the "Exxon Gasoline Arena" or the "Bayer Aspirin Arena." It just sounds a little odd.

That's what my husband and I said!

PPG Arena is MUCH better.

Agree - especially odd in that Paint is only one of the products they make

The "Paint" is to shed light on the fact that they produce paints for the home and actually have retail stores. They are attempting to compete with Sherwin Williams and Behr but have almost zero name recognition in the space. This is an attempt to reach out to consumers on that front. Most of their other products are used in manufacturing or auto applications and aren't sold directly to consumers.

I think though is that they are making a large marketing push these days for their paints and industrial coatings, so that is why they want to include "paints" in the name.

The Paints part just makes it sound horrible and even more corporate than the standard sports arena today.

Without Paints it's just Pittsburgh Arena. They want to sell paint, not make it sound better.

Does it seem odd that "Energy" is included in "Consol Energy Arena"?

Huh? It's PPG as in Pittsburgh Plate Glass, not PGH.
