Ideally I'm looking for a nonsmoking bar (not a bar/restaurant) where I won't get funny looks if I order a cocktail instead of a beer or vice versa. And at the same time I don't want to pay more than 5 or 6 dollars a drink either. The closest thing I've found to what I'm looking for is Lot 17 in Bloomfield. But they are definitely a restaurant, I've never been able to get a seat at the bar, and I'm not much for watching sports while drinking, and that seems to be the thing there. I haven't noticed a jukebox or pool table or anything. But a restaurant/bar divided up in that manner would be fine, but I don't want to feel like I'm sitting at the bar of Applebees or something; There has to be something going on, even if its just a jukebox, pinball machine, pool table, etc.

But I know thats a pretty exacting set of requirements, so lets just stick with non smoking bars in the city. I have places to crash in Bloomfield and Regent Square, but taking a taxi or bus isn't out of the question either.

A few that quickly come to mind in the general area:

Mariani's on Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield - neighborhood feel
Red Room at Centre and Highland in East Liberty - upscale, quiet
Casbah on S. Highland Avenue in Shadyside - upscale bar separate from restaurant
Cappy's on Walnut Street in Shadyside - neighborhood place (2 TVs)
Kelly's in Centre near Highland in East Liberty - young crowd and great martinis
Spin on Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside - great selection - predominantly gay with some straight folks. TVs play loops of music videos but it's not pbnoxious.
Walnut Grill on Walnut St. & Bellefonte (second floor) in Shadyside - bar separate from restaurant. Entertainment on weekends
Walnut Grove (right under Walnut Grill) - bar and appetizers
Palomino in Gateway Center (downtown) - great views with floor to ceiling windows
Bossa Nova on Seventh Street (Cultural District) - great atmosphere with downtown professionals and theater crowd

Thanks. I was hoping for specific recommendations, which is why I didn't use barsmart's page. It lists places like Aladdin's Eatery and seems to be mostly restaurants when it comes to non-smoking. Which I guess makes sense, it's not financially smart to ban smoking if you don't have to.

@Geeo, I had never heard the Pleasure Bar referred to as Mariani's lol. Those look like some good suggestions for a more upscale environment. I'll give some of them a shot. Still need a non smoking dive bar, though. Which I doubt exists in any city without a smoking ban, oh well. Thanks!

I thought they had changed the name on the sign to Mariani's. A lot of people do call it the Pleasure Bar. When I first moved here I thought it was a strip club.

As for dive bars, I doubt that many would be non-smoking. All I can think of are Chief's on Craig near Centre and Brewers on Liberty Ave at Herron, and I'm pretty sure you'll need to wash your clothes after being in them a minute or two. It's all part of the ambience.

Haha, it's cool. I'm happy with the suggestions you gave me, Red Room looks particularly interesting, thanks a lot. Looks like I'll have to leave my pool playing, juke box listening, drunk self to the Ohio bars.

BBT switched back and now allows smoking. Ironically, "Smokin' Joes" (Carson & 20th) no longer allows smoking!

Is that normal prices in Pittsburgh, or higher end prices? Seems like NYC/SF prices! Just curious...

Lol, when's the last time you bought a drink in NYC? I'd hate to see what kind of crap liquor you'd get in your drink for $5-6 in NYC...

$6 for a drink in Pittsburgh is on the high side for a neighborhood bar/shot and a beer type place (of course, depends on the liquor), and def. a little high for a well drink, but it depends on where you are. If you're at a decent restaurant or a slightly more upscale bar, that's the norm.

Yeah I'd say the norm for a well drink at a neighborhood bar is probably 3.50, and beers for 2. But at restaurants and high end places it starts to go up. Some of the high end downtown places I was looking at had 10 - 13 dollar cocktails, and I've even paid 6 bucks for a coors light at a restaurant once, I believe.

But yeah, most of my googling for non smoking bars in pittsburgh lead to places like Olive or Twist or Doc's in Shadyside, both of which had $10+ drinks listed on their website.
