Okay, so, here's the story...

Moving to the area in 3-4weeks (will be working at CMU). No time to tour places ahead of time, have spent a ton of time looking at city-data maps and stats etc trying to narrow down where to rent. Have primarily been looking around Frick park - squirrel hill, regent square, and the westernmost portion of Wilkinsburg/Edgewood border (have been cautioned to not look east of the busway). I have been warned off of living anywhere that requires driving through a tunnel to get to work, and I've been cautioned against bridges as bottlenecks; however, I will also need to frequent the airport for work purposes, and since airport and CMU are on opposite sides of the river I'm not sure what to do. Don't know anything really about areas north or west of the city, but am starting to really worry about it taking 1-2h to get to the airport during rush hour if I live near Frick park.

Requirements: 20-30minute max commute to CMU, 2+ bedrooms/900+sf, cat-friendly, easy parking (2 vehicles so off-street would be ideal), and above all else, SAFE. Can't stress that enough.

Came across this today and it grabbed my interest, but again I know less than zero about any areas other than around Frick park...

Help! Really need to get this firmed up ASAP. Suggestions for specific places or general areas to check out are welcome, thoughts on driving across PGH to the airport (if living around Frick) would be VERY appreciated.

Is CMU giving you an on-campus parking space?

How often do you expect having to fly? There's also Latrobe Airport. Never used it but I hear it's quick in and out. Less hassle.

What’s your budget.....was going to recommend the south side but most places with off steeet parking are quite pricey.

You mean you'll be renting a space each month? You can't rely on metered spaces in Oakland.

You can pay through the nose for a parking pass, but parking on campus is tight because of construction. A CMU ID is also a bus pass.

OP, I'd add in Mt. Washington as well. Since it's on top of the Ft. Pitt tunnel, generally, it's fairly easy to get down the front of the hill on McArdle and over the Liberty Bridge to get to Oakland, and also easy to go down the back of the hill on Woodruff to 51/Parkway West to get to the airport. I did that for years. It's not going to be easy parking, though.

Maybe the Crane Village or Hyland Hills apartments off of Crane Ave on the Greentree/Banksville border might work, too. You'd have to go through the Ft. Pitt tunnel, but if you catch the traffic at the right time (and you know some shortcuts) it's not that bad.

Unless you are flying out weekly, I would not worry about the airport commute as much as the cmu commute. The commute the airport is really not that bad, just plan your travels during noon peak times and it is around 40 min.

I second what guy2073 said, you should worry about your commute and not about the time it takes you to get to the airport. Sight unseen, maybe call Walnut Capital. Although, that might be pricey. Or Rockwel Realty? They have a decent amount in the East End.

Yeah, I was trying to say this. If you work in Oakland, it's a good idea to ensure you live on a bus line which goes into Oakland, because you're going to find out pretty quickly it's cheaper and more convenient than driving in.
