You need meth to counter the downers and keep you safe.

There are also cases where the driver has a medical problem--most commonly a heart attack--and ends up killing their passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians. A woman was just killed walking on the sidewalk in Carnegie after a driver had a 'medical emergency'.
As others have said, driverless cars don't need to be 100% foolproof (not sure that is possible, but safer than cars with drivers.
Currently about 5,000 pedestrians are killed by cars each year (and that doesn't include the bicyclists, passengers, or other drivers killed).

Self driving cars in this weather today is just not good at all. When we as a society get to the point where we need self driving cars going up and down these hills etc to exist there is something wrong.

Can you elaborate? I think the idea that we have rough weather, steep hills, and generally difficult terrain makes Pittsburgh a great place for testing the technology and its limitations (rather than flat, sunny Arizona).

In Florida, when driving closely behind someone, it's not unusual to see a pair of hands on the steering wheel and nothing else. I refer to these as headless drivers.

I find it interesting that this woman was walking her bike across some odd area 10PM on sunday night and somehow just walked in front of a car that was going 5 MPH under the speed limit. If it was some driver at the wheel most would point the finger at the cyclist crossing in that spot, or at least I would think that is how people would react.

There is a video of the accident now. Shows exterior (victim) and interior (driver).

Two things stand out to me. 1 - I'm surprised the car couldn't spot the pedestrian. It doesn't look like she came out of nowhere - based on the speed she was walking and the fact that she was already in the middle of the road. 2 - It looks like the human behind the wheel is paying no attention (almost asleep).
