Because doom and gloom makes great news in the opinion of our current news media. Just look at the title of the article linked below from the Post Gazette. "City pinpointed as most responsible for Allegheny County's population drop"

City pinpointed as most responsible for Allegheny County's population drop | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

In terms of national news, I have linked a few stories/lists below about shrinking cities and Pittsburgh is mentioned in both of them.

10 American cities that have fallen into decline - Business Insider

If Pittsburgh drops below 300,000, even in an estimate, I could see many headlines and the media could revive the "Rust Belt" narratives about the once proud Steel City that is still struggling to recover from the loss of manufacturing jobs. Anybody who has spent a significant amount of time in Pittsburgh can tell you that this is the furthest thing from the truth, but perception is often reality and stories like the ones I linked above don't help to improve perceptions of Pittsburgh.

Most people don't.
But some forumites who live in the suburbs and/or no longer live here enjoy the narrative that Pittsburgh is a terrible place to live. That helps them feel good about their life choices. It's funny that the people on here who like the city are people who actually live in the city. Hmm...

I'm not even sure as a Pittsburgher that I would care. If the city is in good shape financially, 300k really just seems like an arbitrary metric. If it makes anyone feel better 300000 is 506463 in number base 9.

I just laugh at it all really, but like to make the "eek" symbol.

Seriously I will take quality over quantity any day. Keep the gentrification coming, we need better bus routes, better infrastructure and certainly better schools in the city.

I like the city a lot. I simply prefer to visit than live there. I also don’t see any significance in the population dropping below 300k. I also prefer less people. It equals less noise, congestion, etc...

I love the city and love living in a first ring suburb. The generalizations here are silly.

I completely disagree and look at all of the stories about Detroit’s population decline as an example. There has been significant and well documented media coverage of Detroit’s population decline.

Visiting the city is much different than living here 24/7. The rough side of Pittsburgh lies outside the tourist spots and is ignored by the media, Peduto, and rich East Enders.
