As the article takes pains to mention, this is a thing that happens everywhere, not just Pittsburgh.

It seems like 90% of the time there is a slow driver in the fast lane these days, they're talking on their cell phone. Apparently talking and driving causes people to slowly decelerate or something.

Personally, on the rare occasions I'm on the highway, provided there's no traffic I set the cruise control for nine mph over the speed limit and just leave it. If someone is gunning it and wants to risk getting pulled over by a cop I'll shift over to the right lane. I can't stand people who pass on the right, although I know sometimes idiots make it essential.

So you will cruise in the left lane and not get out of the way of faster traffic coming up behind you?

My driving style has changed over the past 10 years. I just assume I am passing on the right often. I don't even care anymore about it as it is just normal now. People are texting in the left lane as I think it feels safer for them and as people are wildly selfish these days, I am just taking care of myself and not worrying about others anymore. Just too many texting drivers to care. I just watch what everyone else does and try to avoid as many people as I can knowing they are texting/surfing the web.

There is only one way to stop it. All cars need a mandatory phone shutoff while in motion. You need to look at your propaganda machine, you have to pull over. It would save countless lives.

Left lane is for passing only. Driving 101.

That certainly is the current law in PA. Of course it's not usually well-enforced. A cop CAN pull you over for driving in the left lane when there's nobody in the right lane that you are currently passing.

No, I always try to get to the right lane if it's open. But sometimes people are so aggressive they don't give me a chance to shift out of the lane.

Obviously if the road is totally empty I'll just drive in the right lane as well.

Perhaps it's hazardous in theory but I've never heard someone say this caused them an accident. If the law is going to be enforced primarily because it's annoying, I'd support that. From a safety perspective, I think there are more common, more hazardous driving behaviors.

And then will pull you over with no traffic in the left lane at times. I was on the turnpike at night so I was in the left lane on cruise control. I just didnt want to worry about something jumping out of the side and didnt think about it. A Trooper pulled me over and said to stay in the right with a warning.
