Behind a paywall, but Bombardier has announced big changes will take place in the next year.

1. It is selling its existing location on Lebanon Church Road in West Mifflin, with manufacturing in the Pittsburgh area ceasing entirely.

2. However, 500-550 of the existing workforce (white collar workers) will not lose their jobs, but be relocated to the now mostly vacant "Seagate Building" in the Strip District.

There is another PBT article that elaborates on the trend thanks to JLL studies. Something like 500k sq ft of metro office space has moved into the city since 2015 which represents 8% of available space metro-wide, 13% city.

And the weird thing is absolutely none of it is going in Downtown proper. Indeed, Downtown's Class B/C office space has been (absent the PNC towers) steadily shrinking due to residential conversions.

So 500 employees are going to relocate from west Mifflin where parking is free into the Strip where you pay to park? Does this move include pay raises? I still think we need good paying jobs in the suburbs. What about the people that live further south and have to make this commute?

That water company, which I cannot remember the name of, moved downtown to the K&L Gates building. Overall thought I think it is a good thing as it creates more residential living downtown which helps liven it up after hours, and the offices in other city neighborhoods gives them more life during working hours.

I’m not sure. Is this company mostly younger folks? Or is it older folks? On the surface it seems like a thin the herd type of move. Ultimately less jobs when people say to heck with paying for parking.

Or thin the herd of higher paid old folks who can't fathom paying for parking, and replace them with younger people who they can pay less for the same work. It's the circle of corporate life.

Personally I'm waiting for the Wabtec announcement. With the merger with GE Transportation going forward, they're going to have 27,000 employees. There's no way they're going to keep their HQ in Wilmerding. Either they're going to move to downtown Pittsburgh or out of the region entirely.

not surprising at all. centrally located offices make sense. that seagate building would fit right in the dullest of suburban office parks, but a great locaiton. what are some other examples of companies moving from the suburbs to the city?
