I remember there being a lot of snow when I was younger, and “winter boots” almost being a must. I also remember it being sunnier in winter months.

I started kindergarten in 1960. I think the only time school was cancelled from K through 12 was two days when I was in second grade. They didn't do 2 hour delays in those days. The worst winters I can remember in Pittsburgh were the winters of 1977-78 and 1978-79. The first had snow on the ground for around two months. The second had snow and frigid temperatures. Other than the storm of St. Patrick's Day of 1993, we have had some snow, but no winters stand out.

Me too (I'm 53)... Black rubber over boots with metal buckles, plastic bread bags over your shoes/socks so you could slide the boots on more easily. Wet mittens went on top of a HUGE, probably 50% efficient gas furnace, 3x the size of modern units.

As for snow, remember back in Feb of 2010? I was living near Plum at the time, and we got 2 feet+... All of it hand shoveled by me from my 165' driveway

Love the photos! Yes this is the last big snow I can recall. You're a beast for doing that all by hand.

And yes, the galoshes with Wonder Bread plastic wrappers.

I wish I lived in Pittsburgh for Snowmageddon. It was pretty wild down in Northern Virginia, too, where I lived at the time. I was off work for a week.

Since I moved here in late-2010 we haven't had any big snow storms. Quite disappointing. I consider 1"-3" a "dusting".

I remember it. It was kinda neat at the time but I don’t miss it. I decided to become a snowbird though, so I’m glad I don’t have to experience it should it happen again....but if it does I expect outrage should every street not be cleared of most every flake while it’s happening and as soon as it’s done

How much did people get from the lake effect yesterday and overnight? I got close to an inch in Bellevue but it looks like there's nothing in the Hill District while I can see Mt. Washington has snow too. I saw on Facebook someone had nearly two inches in the West End. I happened to get woken up by a loud wind gust at 2 am and saw the white out.

That was the best month for snow in my life and nothing will probably ever beat that month. What I would give for another storm like that again!

We have had two 8 to 10 inch storms since then, but that's been it. One was in February 2011 and the other in March 2018.

So is Pittsburgh really northeastern if there are little to no impacts from this nor’easter that is supposed to hit? It looks like we are too far west.

Pittsburgh is NOT in the snow belt at all and it certainly isn't a snowy area. Never was. You have to go north of 80 or head east a bit in that area around Seven Springs/Donegal down to Deep Creek area. They all get snow.

People mention, I remember this and that, but in my 50+ years around here we almost never really get snow. Sure we get that 3" thing and it melts in a couple of days and another 2" thing melts and repeat, so it seems like we get snow, but it always melts.
