In light of US Steel's recent decision to cancel $1.5 billion in upgrades to the Mon Valley Works, some (such as Lt Gov Fetterman) are acting as if this is the nail in the coffin for the Works and the future of steelmaking in this region. (https://www.post-gazette.com/busines...s/202105030029)

Anyways, I'm curious as to the thoughts of others (particularly eschaton) - do they believe that this marks the 'death warrant' (Fetterman's words) for the Mon Valley Works?

I think it is. US Steel invested money in Plants down south from what I recall over the past year or two. Announcing those projects. Without major investments to the ones locally I don’t see how they continue to produce. Companies like US Steel will put millions and more if they are planning on keeping a plant open. Although sometimes this is not true as in automotive manufacturing. I’ve seen assembly plants get a new half a billion dollar paint shop and the company closes the plant 2 years later. It was a long time to plan the project then when the money comes to pay for it, a few years later management has plans to then close it. Likely in US Steels case they aren’t rich nowadays like the auto industry so they probably cancelled it with plans to close these plants and invest the money elsewhere.

Btw I am in the Chicago area for work and drove by the US Steel Gary, IN plant. It is massive. I think most of the coils come from this plant nowadays anyway

Did you forget that PA is run by the Republicans?

Also the job market is absolutely awful in Arkansas and easily one of the worst in the USA.

Have you been in a coma since the pandemic started and somehow missed that year when Tom Wolf decided to sideline the legislature and do his best reenactment of King George III???

Democrats haven't had a governing trifecta since the days of Bob Casey Sr, both Ridge and Corbett enjoyed such a luxury their entire time in office. If you are looking at a party to blame, you are picking the wrong one.

Philly sucked before that time, during it, and now. It's why you post here.

PA has an unresponsive state government and high skilled labor costs. The latter is not due to labor demand, but because of labor unions. They started eating their young in the 1980s and have not stopped.

God help us all if Fetterman ever has another government job. The guy was meant for Braddock and that's about it. Helping young kids stay outta trouble. Attracting industry and jobs to our state? Gimme a break. His first task as Lt Gov was to go on a "marijuana tour".

Meanwhile the steel industry is building a new plant in WV with many good paying jobs. https://www.timeswv.com/news/local_n...c1a890eec.html
