We have been renting an apartment in Shadyside and are ready to buy our first home. We are considering Squirrel Hill, Fox Chapel, and the North Hills. Our price range is $300-$400. We are more familiar with Squirrell Hill than Fox Chapel/North Hills and are lost as to the differences between the townships within Fox Chapel, such as O'hara, Aspinwall, etc. Likewise, although we know of some townships within the North Hills, such as Gibsonia, Ross, etc., we don't know much about what exactly encompasses the North Hills.

The essential issues for us include:
1. Shortest and easiest commute to Shadyside/Downtown
2. Lowest Taxes - property and income
3. Jewish community/temple

Right now we are leaning more towards Sq. Hill and O'Hara based on others' recommendations, but are wide open to more advise about these areas, esp. Fox Chapel and the North Hills.

Thank you!

Aspinwall and O'Hara Twp. are part of the school system and border Fox Chapel but are not a part of it. Fox Chapel is a singular borough. You can look up real estate taxes on the county web site. Currently they are using assessment values from 2002. If you look at listings on the Howard Hanna site they tell the taxes. Taxes are high all over Allegheny county mostly because of school taxes. Shortest commute depends on where you move. Municipalities outside the city usually charge 1% income tax. In the city I think it is 3%+.

From my knowledge of the North Hills, is it is a suburban sprawl suburb of chain stores, and McMansion box plans. I am sure it is a big difference between that and Squirrel Hill. I would rather pay more taxes and have the ammenities of the city then live there.

Since you already live there, you are at an advantage over someone just moving to the Burgh and trying to buy a house. I would suggest taking a few Sunday drives to the places you are unfamiliar with and get to know them a ltitle better before you buy. There was a thread on here a while back about someone who moved to the burbs and had no idea there wasn't decent public transportation, independent movie theaters, etc.
