Just trying to find some info about the pipefitter or the sheetmetal unions in Pittsburgh. How are they doing in the economy? Do you know of any layoffs? Are the salaries of these unions in line with the cost of living in the Pittsburgh area? Any info or comments you might have would be great.

Thanks.

Salaries are in line with the cost of living in Pittsburgh. Sheetmetal Workers Union has excellent benefits---pipefitters probably does too.

Unions are having a difficult time finding people who are interested in labor work, which is far different from the days when it was hard to get into the union. If you're interested in apprenticeship, area unions are competing for applications.

That's all I can tell you except that overall employment has recently dropped to 6.9%. (Over the past two decades, it has hovered around there a few times.) Here's the regional unemployment statistics from 1990 until present: Unemployment Rate: Pittsburgh, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area, Pennsylvania; Percent; NSA
