I don't like Mineo's much, either. But back in the '60s and '70s, it was the only pizza you could eat in Pittsburgh. Everything else was this thickish breadlike stuff, and, ugh, it was so bad. I came from New Jersey, where pizza was, like, the state food, so anything but Mineo's was literally inedible.

But now, yeah, it sucks. The cheese doesn't stand up either to being baked so hot or baked so long. It's a horrible texture. And it leaches out oil. You have to stick napkins on the pizza to get rid of the oil.

And now that you can't smoke there anymore, it stinks of the air freshener from the bathroom. Sometimes when I'm walking to Jerry's, I can smell it out on Murray Avenue.
Damn, you sure are making me hungry for a slice of that Mineo's.

Well, to me pizza is a broad topic. There is thin crust, thick crust, hand tossed, Sicilian, wood fired. There are different sauces and cheeses. California Pizza Kitchen is getting ready to open as a Ross Park Mall exterior addition. I was only there once, Myrtle Beach. I had my choice of ten different sauces and ten different cheeses and countless toppings. I ordered a thin crust with ranch sauce, swiss cheese, turkey, bacon tomato and onion. The pizza has indeed evolved. Personally, places like Il forno and Il Pizzaiola are ok, but overpriced. One needs to try Mama Lucias Sicilian slice . They are on Wood Street Downtown, near Forbes.

Anyone know any good pizza places around Plum?
Jioio's is fine if you have a sweet tooth. They put enough sugar in their sauce to choke a horse.

Harry's on Rt 19 in Peters is good. Another consistent favorite is Fiori's on Capital (it is either Beechview or Brookline there)

I'm not any sort of expert on Pizza. But I prefer Italian Village. I've been to the ones in Century III, Dravosburg, Belle Vernon, and Elizabeth. Very consistent.
