I never really hear metal on any of the stations, and if they play it, it's usually always Metallica. Why is there no variety these days? I was pissed when they converted Greensburg's Sam FM with some classic hits station. At least it played some decent music unlike the oldies crap they have now. There's three other stations in the area that play the same stuff.
The X and B94 are owned by two different parent companies. The X is Clear Channel, B94(now KDKA-FM) is owned by CBS. I agree though regarding 105.9 becoming a near defacto sports talk station. I'm sick of hearing about the Steelers and Penguins on virtually every station. How much sports talk does one market need? I would love for the FCC to yank one of CC's licenses for failure to serve the community.

If Clear Channel (105.9) wanted to compete with CBS (93.7), they could move the Steelers games during the fall from 102.5 WDVE to 105.9, and keep Mark Madden and the Pens games where they're already at, in essence turning the X into a sports talk radio station. A few things would go in the X's favor such as the live telecast games and having Mark Madden onboard. Then, Clear Channel could move the DJ's from the X to a new station built specifically for them and they could blend the format with a little bit of the X and the old 93.7 K-Rock, renaming it to the Force as a homage to the original one from 1994. They could have the prehistoric X (old school new wave, punk, metal) during the weekends as well as an all metal evening from the K-Rock days every weeknight.

Sadly(Well, good for me!), my dinky little town has a pretty decent, independent owned Indie station. 107.1, once you get into Mercer County. Mornings are talk radio, they simulcast a lot of NPR, afternoons is so-so stuff, but in the evening and late into the night they play the really good stuff.

I'm actually really surprised no one in Pittsburgh has moved in on this market, other than CMU. It's sad, really.
