Hi, my husband and I and our two small children live overseas and are considering moving to Pittsburgh, as my husband has been offered a job there. We need some serious advice regarding health insurance and taxes, as we have lived out of the country our entire adult lives. His prospective employer has offered him two options for payment. Either 36k plus full family health insurance with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield , or 45k and no insurance. In our research, we came across the health plan for kids called CHIP, which appears to cover everything for very little money. Does anybody have experience with this plan? Would it be worth it to take this for the kids and a really cheap insurance for ourselves? Is there such a thing? (Thank G-d we have no health issues) And can anybody advise us how much of the paycheck will go towards taxes (income, federal, social security, and anything else we may not know about?) Does this seem like a reasonable amount to live off of? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Either of those salaries seems low to me, especially considering having to make a MAJOR move for. I'm not sure about the regs for CHIP; it is not private insurance. Someone else on this thread may know more about it. My guess is the salary diff is meant to cover the cost of obtaining your own insurance.

LOTS of rules to qualify for CHIP.
Here's their website
CHIP - Children's Health Insurance Program

I don't have any specific answers, but I will tell you that the cost of living here is fairly low. The salaries you mentioned will go much much farther here than they would in a place like New York or DC for instance.
