BP should set aside billions of dollars to cover the costs of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, U.S.
federal and state politicians said Sunday.

Senator Harry Reid plans to send the company a letter Monday, asking it to set up an account
with $20 billion US to pay for the problems caused by the spill.

President Barack Obama also wants BP to establish an escrow account, managed by a third
party, to cover damage claims. He has not named a figure.

You are crazy if you believe 20 billion dollars will cover this mess. As of last Friday(day50) just the fines that will be leveled at BP is estimated to be 8.3 billion dollars, with another 50 days till the relief well gets into position to try and stop this monster. The spill is growing like a big monster as we unfortunately watch via local broadcast here in New Orleans. It is unbelivable what is going on and it ain't nuthen nice. While many americans in other parts of the country aren't getting the complete picture, know the president has little choice but to drasticaly go after BP, and it's not even a republican/democratic issue at this point, it's about to be a national disaster that's gona change many folks lifes forever, just wait a few more weeks and come back to this post and know I told you so. It's a monster of a blowout and the damage and the way it's being handled ain't working out, drastic measures are now needed.

There isnt a chance in hell they will pay anywhere near $8.3B.. The sum will be lower than $1B because BP will just drag it out in the courts for 20 years until some judge deems the fine unreasonable... Good luck getting your $8.3B.. Let me know how that works out, if your still alive..

Here's a solution: BP can cut capacity at its other wells, sending supply into a dive, thus sending prices for crude soaring, thus profiting handsomely off its existing supply, thus providing a nice reserve fund at the behest of Obama and Reid.

Sounds like a plan to me!

Oh, wait. They're already advocating for such a thing:

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - BP Plc said on Monday, global oil refining capacities need to be rationalized to bring utilization back to historical levels in the face of lagging demand.

ie: We need money to pay for this event! Don't think for a second its coming out of our current holdings!

Sure makes for a good sound bite in a tough election year.
Meanwhile lobbyists at BP will get some cash stuffed envelopes to the appropriate parties.
