Protecting the country is something the government should be doing. However, the government isn't doing a darn thing to protect Americans from the drug cartels and the invasion of illegals. It looks to me like for the war on terror to be effective, we would need to secure the border.

The government should not be providing free housing, free unlimited welfare, unlimited foreign aid to corrupt foreign governments, and the government can't afford free healthcare. The government can not afford to be giving Viagra to sex offenders. The stimulus was useless in creating jobs. Ask any unemployed person. The government needs to stay out of all private industries. No more bailouts for any industry. The government needs to allow the housing market to correct itself.

No, we can't afford the wars we are engaged in the Middle East. I think the military bases overseas should have to relocate back to the U.S.

Having read this again in its entirety, I'm pretty sure that we are going to end up much like the former Soviet Union did trying to maintain military parity with the US. We are so addicted to empire, so conditioned to caving to the desires of the defense industry, we are going to spend ourselves into an oubliette of oblivion.

And that military engagement costs money. Congress is so addicted to the economic payouts from the military contractors that it can't give up even the asterisk of all budget items, the second F-35 engine, even when so many of the members understand the absurdity of the situation. And Washington, in general, is so addicted to U.S. military control of the world that it can't give up a single base or allied operation, even when the president, in his NSS, articulates all the reasons why a different, more cooperative approach makes more sense.

We are thus trapped in two illusions: that military spending creates jobs and that the U.S. empire makes us more secure. And these two illusions ensure that the United States continues to spend huge sums on war and the military budget in general.

I agree with Ron Paul. We should end the "Drug War". It has cost trillions and had virtually no effect. And we should get our troops out of every country. I can't believe we still have troops in Germany. Hello. WWII ended in 1945.

Their "argument" has always fallen flat. They spent like drunken sailors for 8 yrs, then squealed like little piggies when the next guy had to spend to keep us from going down the tubes.

Who buys that crap? Spare me.
