Army suicides hit record number in June - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100716/us_yblog_upshot/record-number-of-u-s-soldiers-commited-suicide-last-month - broken link)

Thirty-two soldiers took their own lives last month, the most Army suicides in a single month since the Vietnam era. Eleven of the soldiers were not on active duty. Of the 21 who were, seven were serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said.
Army officials say they don't have any answers to why more and more soldiers are resorting to suicide.
<snip>
Last year, a record-breaking 245 soldiers committed suicide. The Army seems on track to surpass that number this year, as 145 soldiers have taken their lives in the first half of 2010.

Too many kids, too young, not understanding what war is before they join.
32 kids dead in one month.

These are Army numbers and do not include the other branches of the military.

As you can see nobody cares . Some here consider them terrorist . They probably celebrate the news .

It's not the fault of the young people who join, its the fault of the people who don't pay attention[ including myself who voted ] .to who they put in office . We never learn from history .

These poor kids are treated differenty than other soldiers of previous wars except VNam. They give them drugs and send em back over or when they come home they load em up on drugs . Many are known to cause suicidal tendencies.

I feel very bad for them . But America is more worried about Mel Gibsom than the kids they send to war .

If 11 were not active duty, why were they counted?

Still a terrible thing, how does it compare to civilians of that age group?
Nevermind I found it:

Quote:
The Army's current suicide rate is about 22 deaths per 100,000, which is above a civilian rate that has been adjusted to match the demographics of the Army.

Let me help them... Take a young man, pump him up on delusions of glory and patriotism, then throw him in the middle of a Moderator cut: language storm where he sees and deals death and horror on a regular basis. Then just before his contracted term is up, drag him out of his home and make him do it again, and again, and again.

When the young man has aged beyond his years and the indoctrination has finally worn off, the man realizes that his sacrifice and suffering serves only to make a privileged few folks at the very top of the wealth pyramid richer and he no longer wants any part of it. He trys to leave...

His request is answered with a "shut up and do the job!"...he is now property of the government and the only way out is to die, get seriously wounded or hope he'll be eventually let go someday "maybe when the war is over".

in the immortal words of that crusty Disney pirate... Suddenly the barrel of that pistol of his begins to look awful friendly...

Is it really that complicated?

I wonder what the suicide rate was in WWII ... a real war where entire battalions were being wiped out in a single day's fighting as opposed to 10 guys KIA per battalion in an entire year's tour of duty.

No offense Chango, but read the bolded part very, very carefully: THE UNITED STATES SUSPENDED CONSCRIPTION IN 1973. Nobody is forcing them to be there, nobody forced them to join the military. They chose to be there. Period.

This is terrible. Sadly we have to be able to defend ourselves as a nation. I have lost family to war. Its not anything to take lightly yet it is a choice that each person takes that enlist.

I will keep their family in my prayers and I regret that someone was not able to help them deal with whatever caused them to take their own life.

Encarta Suicide

for example, suicide rates declined during World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945), when unemployment was low, but increased during the Great Depression of the 1930s, when unemployment was high.

The average length of enlistment in the Army is 4 years.

It is an all volunteer force, it is a way for people who have no job skills to get some sort of training and/or discipline.
If you don't know what you're getting into, it might be better not to sign a contract.
It is a time of war.

That said, these guys get very little help when they return from downrange. They're told that they don't need help unless they're extremely traumatized and can barely cope. They're harassed by their commands and other military members for their weakness. There's a lot of fear in asking for help. There's very little help when they ask for it.

The rate of civilian suicide according to the link I provided is 18 per 100,000.

So the Air Force(15.5 per 100,000) and Navy(13.3 per 100,000) both have less suicides than their civilian counterparts.

The Army(22 per 100,000) and Marines(24 per 100,000) are higher as shown, what percentage higher are they than civilians, anyone able to work that out?
I suck at that sort of thing.

Also is this including those in the Reserves and National Guard who are NOT deployed or on active duty?
