Many people can't afford to feed their pets , I think a little help from the food banks would take some pressure off the overcrowed animal shelters . I carry coupons with me and give them to seinors at walmart , everyone is so happy to get them.

We don't take pet food donations," Lisa Matzner, director of development for RCS, which provides food to about 7,000 people every month, said.

The problem is that most food pantries are scrambling to keep up with the human demand and you want to add another task.

One tenet of being a pet owner is the ability to care for the animal, if you can't then you owe it to that animal to give it to someone who can care for it.

There are to many hungry people out there to worry about animals.

Sorry, I'm not feeding your pet. Eat the dog, if you're hungry.

Exactly! The way I see it, owning a pet is a luxury, not a necessity. Why should anyone pay for your luxury?

I give donations to my hometown food bank, Mercy Corps or Planned Parenthood for most of my gift items.
I want my donations to ease the pain of human suffering.
Although they are sentient beings, pets are on a different level.
There are no-kill animal shelters in most cities.
If you can't take care of your pets, please give them to someone who will.

People need to be able to provide for their pets. It is their responsibility to do so. Spay & neuter, adopt from shelters. It is not the responsibility of food banks to provide for pets, period. They already do everything they can to meet the human need.

Perhaps the OP can start a pet food bank?

That's a great thing that you do. And despite what some of these naysayers think, for many people, their pets are quite literally their children...and giving them away is not an option. I believe you have a good idea.
