NC slaughterhouse, union get along after fighting - Yahoo! Finance (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/NC-slaughterhouse-union-get-apf-3039342151.html?x=0 - broken link)The proportion of workers injured on the job who missed work days or had to be reassigned dropped from 11.2 per hundred workers in 2006 to 8.8 in 2008, before the union came on board, state safety inspectors said.

The rate dropped again in 2009 to 6.1 per hundred workers and is now 2.1, the company said. The union, which trains workers how to spot hazards, said it couldn't calculate the 2009 injury rate because it didn't have firm figures on the number of workers and the total hours they worked. Problems the company faced with absenteeism or quitting in droves have improved, said Carl Green, the local

Sometimes unions help a company, and sometimes unions can cause the company problems.

Thanks KevK..it's nice to hear stories where unions did make a difference.
They have their place when needed like the story you posted.
Other times..they just want money and power.

I don't like it when unions become too big and powerful. In some countries when one of those giant unions decides to go on a strike, the whole country is paralyzed. Greece comes to mind, Italy, too. I think there should be more civilized ways to arrive at a compromise than blackmail, which is what it often amounts to (For instance, either transportation companies pay xx % higher salaries or public transport will be shut down for days. Very annoying, have experienced it in Germany years ago.).

The slaughterhouse also provides one of the best paychecks in the area, averaging about $12 an hour.
I think that pretty much explains why absenteeism is down....I'm sure this wasn't the case before the union stepped in......how this is suppose relate to higher profits because of the union, I'm not sure.

Go to Detroit and see the squalor that the auto industry is in (even though the big O SAVED them) and tell me that unions make a company money.

The only people that benefit from the union are union bosses and the politicians in bed with them. There are a LOT of unemployed union members.

Didn't you hear? Detroit's problems are completely unrelated to unions. There for some reason or another, but definitely NOT because of unions.
