Even if the police (and they were bicycle cops) HAVE tasers - I doubt they would want to get close enough to some drunk wielding a knife to use one, and if they were using hand guns (which I assume they were) "winging" a suspect is a lot harder than hollywood makes it appear.
This is one of the reasons why legal citizens need to learn English. There was a man who came into a family members work and couldn`t speak English. The family member tried to communicate with this man but the man ended up getting angry and left. This man who could only speak Spanish had such a freaken since of entitlement. Like we should bend over backwards for these freaken people. This is America, learn English!!

There is a 25' rule about knives. A charging man with a knife can reach contact distance in the same amount of time it takes a person (leo) to draw and fire.
Those who think "winging" is possible when the knife weilder is lunging at your are living in a hollywood fantasy world. Absolutey no concept of reality of of self-defense against a lethal threat.
Why shoot someone to death because of a knife? Seems a bit exaggerated. Wouldn't it have been enough to incapacitate him? Then again, maybe it is cheaper to bury him than to operate on him...
