Exhibit A:

Afghans protest Quran burning plan, torch US flag - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100909/ap_on_re_as/quran_burning_reaction - broken link)

"International police organization Interpol warned its 188 member countries that "there will be tragic consequences" and a "strong likelihood" of violent attacks if the burning happens."

Note the Muslims burning an American flag. No uproar or condemnation.

Exhibit B: Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Drawing a PICTURE makes these people go nuts and threaten death. Unreal.

Exhibit C: Salman Rushdie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The publication of the book and the fatwā sparked violence around the world, with bookstores firebombed. Muslim communities in several nations in the West held public rallies in which copies of the book were burned." How ironic....

Why are these Holy Warriors allowed to be zealous in the defence of their religion and national heritage, but Christians, Jews and Westerners are not?

P.S. This is not a message of support for those whackjob Christians in Florida who are going to burn a Quran. I have equal hatred for all religious nutbags who are stuck in the Middle Ages.

Because we actually do have a double standard.

And we hold ourselves to the higher one.

I don't see anyone stopping the Koran burning. The Christian zealots have the same freedom

Actually, we don't. We have freedom of speech here. This guy is allowed to protest islam if he wants to.

These islamofascists need to stop taking offense every time someone looks at them cross-eyed.

At present, many moderate Muslims don't believe that freedom of speech applies to religion. It's a terrible dilemma/impasse for relations between the West and the Islamic world. It's particularly difficult for Muslim living in the West.

Even among Westerners, total freedom of speech is a relatively new phenomenon. Remember the flag burning controversies in the 80s and 90s?

The way to solve it is to show that religion (and society) is often strengthened rather than harmed by freedom of speech. However, this is an abstract argument that takes years (decades?) to be accepted.

The wise course is to avoid inflammatory (literally and figuratively) actions for the time being.

Yes, it's patronizing, but the average man on the street in Kabul or Cairo is not well educated. It's all very well for us to cite John Locke and John Stuart Mill and to praise the virtues of intellectual discourse or satire or artistic license, but they are unable to understand, much less accept, that argument right now.

Because most American's could give a damn about hurting someone elses feelings. This is a positive trait to have. Unless you're a liberal - then hurt feelings are political capital. What better way to show you're a liberal then to forget that you're an American and coddle a religion with hurt feelings? Because that's exactly what's happening right now - the anti-religious Left are teaming up with Big Islam to condemn the Chrisitan faith once again. Funny how the mosque controversy draws out cries of "religious freedom" but we dont' hear these same clowns saying the same for these Christian zealots.

The transparency and hypocrisy is nauseating.

You have all kinds of figures (the President, commanding officer in Afghanistan, etc..) coming out to urge restraint. Do these Muslim regimes and nations ever try to stop anti-Christian or anti-Western outbursts? And why are they allowed to burn things and chant "Death to America", but if we do something that is 1/10 as inflammatory then we are castigated.

The most inflammatory thing that Christians in the West have done is criticize Islam and maybe burn a book. The most inflammatory thing the Muslims have done is oh..I don't know...intentionally murder civilians and stuff.

You don't think freedom of speech is a foundational part of the higher standard to which we hold ourselves? Do you really not think these things out before you push the submit button?

Nobody is saying he doesn't have the right to protest whatever he wants. Just as we have the right to protest his protest. None of that is the issue.

The issue is that we actually do have double standards... or at least those of us with a moral compass do.

And how does burning the Qur'an advance that objective? Exactly?

that's not the same as censorship. The book burners still have a right to burn the Koran, and they plan to do so. why are people so offended that Obama is asking them to practice restraint?

I don't live in a Muslim regime, you'd have to ask them. I really don't care, I'm more concerned with what is happenin in the USA.

I suppose tea party hero, Timothy McVeigh doesn't count as a Christian who intentionally murdered civilians

Substitute "pushover" for "wise".
