Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful. --Lucius Annaeus Seneca

In the beginning the church was a fellowship of men and women centering on the living Christ. Then the church moved to Greece where it became a philosophy. Then it moved to Rome where it became an institution. Next, it moved to Europe, where it became a culture. And, finally, it moved to America where it became an enterprise.--Richard Halverson

I do not find in orthodox Christianity one redeeming feature. --Thomas Jefferson

If it weren't for Christians, I'd be a Christian.-- Mahatma Ghandi

If you have two religions in your land, the two will cut each other's throats; but if you have thirty religions, they dwell in peace. --Voltaire

Man is a Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion—several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat if his theology isn’t straight. --Mark Twain

and last but not least...

A fanatic is someone who cannot change his mind and will not change the subject.—Sir Winston Churchill

Wait...it's not flat and we didn't ride dinosaurs? Man, real history is boring.

From the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin.

Quote:
"Some books against Deism fell into my hands; they were said to be the substance of sermons preached at Boyle's lectures. It happened that they wrought an effect on me quite contrary to what was intended by them; for the arguments of the Deists, which were quoted to be refuted, appeared to me much stronger than the refutations; in short, I soon became a thorough Deist."

Benjamin Franklin: Autobiography, Poor Richard, and Later Writings. New York, NY: Library of America. pp. 619.

Who cares... The important point is that the Constitution was not created to dictate to the American people what religion they must practice.

Shouldn't you be addressing atheists in the religion forum or something? "Libs", as a group defined by you, have no particular spin on religion.

It is well known that this nation wasn't founded by Christians, but that many of them were Deists, and had a belief in God.

Doesn't mean that they were right, doesn't mean that they were wrong. We won't know for certain until we die, and if we should have believed and didn't it will be too late. Whereas if we believed, and we were wrong, that nothing bad will happen as a result of that.
