Although religious conservatives have a big voice in the Republican Party, it seems to me that, over the long term, the party could attract a lot more people by becoming more libertarian on social issues.

Being a Classical Libertarian with Fiscal conservative views I am not a big fan of Religion and politics together. People can claim that the country was formed on the faith in god but it was more built on freedom and history proves that when Religion controls politics freedom is left behind.
With that said religion should not be forced out completely either. Everyone should get a voice as long as it's positive and not hateful or negative toward others beliefs it is needed for people to feel accepted and acknowledged

^ +1

BTW that goes every political party. There is the flip side. UK for example, who created hate laws protecting gays and muslim. They think that protects harmony when really it is government enforcing selective speech, which liberal tend to support. The Republicans fail when they tout small government and individual rights yet try to use the federal government to define marriage which really means banning gay marriage at a federal level.

The republicans need to loose the social stuff and concentrate on government. NOBODY wants to hear it anymore, we are all sick and tired of it. We KNOW it's a diversion, stuff to keep us busy and take our attention away from the crap job most politicians do while serving their terms. We KNOW it's just pandering to the ignorant. We KNOW that no republican will ever turn the country into some sort of 1950's days-gone-by dream world. We KNOW that no matter what they think of homosexuality or abortion or marijuana these things are going to continue to be with us. JUST STOP IT.

I'm done now.

They should adopt Barry Goldwater's positions on social issues.

uhh...who do you mean "Nobody" and "we" and "we are all", Kimo Sabe?

evidently, Conservatives, Republicans, the Right, and the Religious should just lay down, shut up, and let "progressives" have their way with us...and the Country.

gee, what an awfully good plan!

oh, darn it! Leave it to one of us to be the bubble-busting bearer of sad tidings

...aww
