Exactly right. Big Ag can afford this and keeps them in their comfy monopolies yet doesn't do a damn thing for the quality produced as seen in the news about food recalls (bugs in formula, contaminated eggs, beef, lettuce, peanuts, tomatoes).

And this latest Food Safety Bill will close even more doors to small farmers and put a major dent in Farmer Markets.

Too many people read about food contamination and say "we need more rules". Too many people read about the Wall Street fiasco and say "we need more rules". More rules on top of rules that are not followed won't fix anything.

Are derivatives fixed ? $90+ trillion floating out there....interest rates go up and those swaps will implode this country. There's a good reason Uncle Ben is keeping rates at near 0 and it's not for us consumers.

Totalitarians hound intellectuals. In the US academics are despised. Good ole Joe Sixpack is the American Ideal.
Totalitarians use tactics as 'patriotism', wave flags, and keep a wary eye on anyone who doesn't.
The AM dial of America's radios is crammed full of ideological demagogs.
Totalitarians want complete power. America's conservatives believe and insist that only they know what is right, and that everyone who disagrees should not be trusted.

I am a LIBERAL and I do not want either Fascism or Communism. I want a real free market in money, investment and ideas with enough regulation to end speculation and force polluters to internalize the cost of stopping. How is that Un-American?

The general rule that many Americans apply is if capitalism can't do want it wants and must act responsibly, treat workers as humans, then it's a step toward communism.

Perhaps...but it's not necessarily the case. It seems that a lot of Americans think that if the gov't doesn't guarantee or provide certain things that we'll have 7 year olds working 19 hours a day, 7 days a week in sweatshops.

That's not necessarily true, either.

Don't listen to the socialists here, they have been given their talking points and to push socialism is one of them. They are only doing what they were told to do.

You mean like America was prior to 1938 (passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act)? Back in the good ole days when companies hired goons to beat on striking workers with clubs and pipes. When poverty children worked in factories and were denied any health care. Much of this has been described in "Twenty Years At Hull House" written by Jane Addams.
